Stepping up against violence – Zoe Scharenguivel, Friends With Dignity Australia

Our very own Coomera Anglican College mum, Zoe Scharenguivel jumped into action after her pregnant friend lost her life to domestic violence.

The busy mum of three decided to organise a small lunch to raise funds to support an organisation involved in domestic violence prevention.

Thanks to Zoe's contacts and interest in the event, the lunch turned into something much bigger and raised $5000.

The experience also led Zoe to another advocate for people affected by violence. Together they founded Friends With Dignity Australia, which transforms houses into sanctuaries for women, men and children.

"The primary goal is to create a welcoming home for those who have suffered domestic and family violence and have literally left their entire lives behind," Zoe says.

Friends With Dignity also provides monitored personal safety alarms to people at risk of domestic violence.

Zoe inspires a team of supporters, who organise drives to collect donations of new or quality used furniture and white goods and also speak out against domestic violence.

"I am passionate about making a difference and being a positive role model for my children," she says.

"I have personally coordinated over 35 major fundraising events since launching to ensure ongoing funds come into the organisation as we are 100 per cent self-funded."

Westfield Local Heroes are nominated and voted for by their communities, with the three top finalists per Westfield centre each awarded a $10,000 grant for their affiliated organisation. If Zoe is successful, Friends with Dignity will use its grant to help sustain the self-funded program.

Zoe's nominator says: "Zoe has helped more than 3000 men, women and children sleep soundly and safely in their own beds dreaming of a brighter future."

Let's get behind Zoe and support our College mum! Voting closes 14 September.
